A day in Chengdu 成都的一天Thecitythatneverhurries
Spend one day in Sichuan's capital, from the pandas' breakfast to the last opera mask. Every hour is a place, a fact worth repeating, a word to say out loud and something to play with — and a seal for your passport.
Panda morning
熊猫的早晨

The panda base opens early for a reason: pandas eat at dawn and are asleep by lunch. A grown panda chews bamboo for more than ten hours a day, and bamboo is about 99% of everything it eats — even though, on paper, it is still a carnivore.
Say it
Feed the panda
The keeper hands you breakfast. Ask for it out loud — but which zhu?
Dujiangyan: water and mountain
都江堰与青城山

An hour west of the city, a river has been tamed the same way since around 256 BC. Li Bing's engineers built no dam: a stone snout, the fish mouth, splits the Min River in two — one branch to the fields, one to carry the floods away. It still waters the Chengdu plain today.
Say it
Split the river
Pick the season and watch the fish mouth decide.
- Inner river → the fields
- Outer river → away from the city
Low water: about six parts go to the fields, four stay in the river.
A Chengdu teahouse afternoon
茶馆的下午

In Chengdu you don't buy the tea — you buy the chair. One lidded bowl and the afternoon is yours: the server tops you up from a copper kettle with a spout a metre long, the leaves stay in, and nobody asks you to leave. Once you sit down, it's the whole afternoon — 一坐就是一下午.
Say it
Heaven, man, earth
A 盖碗 has three parts, and old teahouse talk gives each a name. Tap them.

Mahjong in the park
搓麻将

Walk through any park after lunch and you hear it before you see it: the rattle of tiles being shuffled face-down — 搓, rubbed between the palms. Sichuan plays 血战到底, “bloody battle to the end”: the round goes on until only one player hasn't won, which is why games here last all afternoon.
Say it
Rub the tiles
Shuffle, then flip. Every tile hides a word you'll only hear in Sichuan.
Kuanzhai Alley at dusk
宽窄巷子与锦里

The alleys go back to a Qing garrison quarter laid out in 1718: grey-brick walls, timber gates, courtyards hidden behind them. Today they're a river of visitors. Don't shop — stroll; the word is 逛. Then walk to Jinli after dark, when the whole lane turns red under its lanterns.

The third alley
宽巷子 the Wide Alley, 窄巷子 the Narrow Alley, and…?
Chengdu street food
小吃巡游

串串香 is hotpot on a stick: pick your skewers from the fridge, cook them in the shared red broth, eat, repeat. Then something cold — 冰粉, a wobbly jelly in brown-sugar syrup — and, if you're brave, a spicy rabbit head, 兔头.
Say it
The sticks are the bill
Eat as many as you dare. Watch the heat — and the pile.

Sichuan hotpot night
火锅之夜

The split pot is 鸳鸯锅, named after mandarin ducks, which always come in pairs: red broth on one side, clear on the other. Sichuan heat is two things — 麻, the fizzing numbness of the peppercorn, and 辣, the burn of the chilli. The little dish of sesame oil and garlic is your fire extinguisher.
Say it
Seven up, eight down
Dip the tripe, lift it, dip it again. Don't let it sit.

Sichuan opera: the changing face
川剧变脸

A sleeve sweeps across the actor's face and the mask is different — then again, and again, faster than you can blink. It's live stagecraft, and in 1987 the technique was made a state-protected secret, passed only from master to disciple. Outside, the lanterns along the river are lit.
Say it
Change the face
Tap the mask. Every colour means something on the Sichuan stage.

The day's over. The Chinese isn't.
