底下的「贝」是贝壳——古代中国的钱——买、卖、贵里都有它。上面原来是两只手把一件宝贝举起来。值钱，然后是尊贵：「贵」也是尊敬，比如「贵姓」。「有点儿贵」是顾客的话；「您贵姓」是同一个字在讲礼貌。

辛表意pungent — originally a tattooing knife, hence pain束表意a bundle — tied tight辣

左边的「辛」原来是一把给奴隶刻记号的小刀——疼，引申出又冲又辛的味道。右边的「束」是一捆扎紧的东西。合起来：一种抓住你、刺着你的味道。「辣」是四川的整个性格，「有点儿辣」是外国人在成都流着泪说的话。

看顶上：「臼」是动物的头，露着牙。下面是腿，右边是长长拖着的尾巴。「鼠」是一幅老鼠的画，三千年来胡子都没掉。「老鼠」的「老」是个亲切的前缀，跟「老虎」一样——没人觉得老鼠老。鼠排在十二生肖的第一位：鼠年。
