上面 is not 'on' — it is a noun, the table's top side. Say exactly where things are: 在 + place + 上面 / 里面 / 旁边.

「上」没有实物可画——它是个概念——所以最早的人画了一条线，在线的上方点了一笔。整个字就是一个指针：比这条线高。它还管着你的日历：上个月，就是上面那个月，因为中文的清单像账本一样往下写——所以「上面」就是「更早」。

还是那条线，记号挪到下方：比这条线低。「上」和「下」是一对指针，它们碰过的词也都成双成对——上面和下面，上个月和下个月。在中文的页面上指上指下，其实也是在时间里指前指后。日历词的全部机关就在这儿。
face; side, surface
象象形 · 照着画
一张脸：最早的字形是围着一只眼睛画的一圈轮廓——用一个器官代表整张脸。从脸引申出表面和侧面，这就是上面、里面、对面里的「面」：上边那面、里边那面、正对着的那面。那面条呢？面条本来是带麦字旁的「麵」，简化时把差事交给了这个字。菜单上的「面」和「上面」的「面」，是同一个字的两段人生——又是「只」和「几」那样的故事。

- 出声盘点一个房间：三样东西，三句话——……在桌子上面，……在沙发上，……在冰箱里面。
- 「上面」是一个地方，不是 on——是桌子的上方，你的咖啡能坐的地方。信了这一条，「的」的规则自己就通了。
- 东西不见了？两件工具你都有了：「我的钱包在哪里？」是在问；「我的钱包呢？」是带着情绪在问。
