to see; to meet
象drawn from life
An eye 目 on top of a pair of legs — a person reduced to the act of looking. The traditional 見 shows it plainly; the simplified 见 keeps the shape. To see, and so to meet: 再见 see you again, 见面 to meet face to face, 看见 to have actually seen. 你看见我的手机了吗？ — did the eye on legs find it?

A roof 宀 over 元, whole: a house with its roof on — complete. 完 is finished, 吃完 eaten up, 做完 done, 卖完 sold out, and 完了 on its own is the sigh of someone who has just realised something has gone wrong. 你的工作做完没有？ — is the roof on yet?
to understand
形meaning + sound
A heart 忄 with 董 for the sound: understanding is something the heart does, not the ear. That is why 听懂 is more than 听见 — the sound arrived, and then the heart caught it. 我没听懂 is the heart admitting it missed; 懂了 is the small light going on.
