The outer stroke 勹 is a figure bending around; inside curls 巳, a child not yet born — the whole character is a picture of wrapping, drawn from the first wrapped thing anyone ever was. From there it wraps everything: 包子, dough folded around its filling, and the plain 包 that means a bag. This lesson holds both ends of its price range: 我要两个包子 for breakfast money, 我想要一个LV的包 for considerably more.

合 'to close' sits on top of 手 'hand': a hand closing over something is exactly what taking is. That is the honest half. The other half is a joke played on coffee: 拿铁, 'take-iron', means latte and has nothing to do with taking or with iron — the characters were hired for their sound alone, the same way 咖啡 was. Every 我要喝拿铁 you order has a closing hand floating in the cup.

The two 王 here are not kings — inside a character, 玉 jade gives up its dot. Between the two jades runs a knife: 班 is the act of cutting a jade in two to share it out, which drifted into 'divide into groups', which drifted into the groups themselves — your class at school, your shift at work. 上班 is climbing onto your shift, and 我明天要上班 is need-要's favourite sentence. Now you can see the knife in the middle of it.
