The old dictionaries read 再 as 'one thing raised twice' — a stack with a second layer added, the frame under a line. However you see it, the character is about a second time: 再见 see-again, 再来 come-again, 再说一遍 say it again. In 吃了再走 the second time is simply the next thing.
a time through; everywhere
形meaning + sound
The walking radical 辶 and 扁 for the sound: to walk all the way through. As a measure word it counts a complete run of something — 说一遍 say it once through, 看一遍 read it once through — which is why 再说一遍 asks for the whole sentence again, not just the last word. 遍 also means everywhere: 走遍中国, to have travelled all of China.

Grain 禾 over what was once 甘, sweet: the smell of cooking millet — fragrant. 香 is the good smell of food, the incense at a temple, and the first half of 香蕉, the banana, and 香菜, coriander. 我想再吃一个香蕉 — one more fragrant one.
