每 itself, the character for sleep, and the early morning every 每天 starts with.

Underneath is 母, a kneeling woman with two dots for the breasts — 'mother'. On top sits a hairpin or plume. The oldest 每 was a picture of an adorned woman, and its meaning wandered: flourishing, then 'every' — and that borrowed meaning is the one that survived. So 每天 hides a mother with her hair done. In 海, the sea, the same 每 lends its sound: mǎi-ish became hǎi.

An eye 目 on the left, and 垂 on the right — which happens to mean droop and to sound like shuì. Drooping eyes: the character is a yawn. 睡觉 adds 觉, the sleep itself; 我每天都十一点睡觉 is the sentence half of China says with pride and the other half with guilt.

The sun 日 sitting just above a mark that was once a head or a helmet: sunrise at head-height, the day beginning. 早上 is the morning, 早 on its own is 'early' — and 早！ said to a colleague at eight is the whole of good morning. 我每天都六点起床 is a very 早 sentence.
