最 — The Top of the Thermometer

The bottom is 取, to take — literally an ear 耳 in a hand 又, from the grim old custom of proving a battlefield deed by the ear brought back. The top looks like 曰 but is a flattened 冒, to risk: to take at any risk, to seize outright. Han dynasty performance reviews used exactly this word for the official who seized first place — the top grade was 最, the bottom grade was 殿 — and two thousand years of report cards later, 最 still means what it meant on those bamboo slips: number one.

The traditional form 愛 kept a 心, a heart, at its center. Simplification lifted the heart out and set 友, friend, in its place — people still tease that simplified love lost its heart and gained a friend. Read today's shape kindly and it earns its keep all the same: a hand reaching down, a roof, and a friend under it. Either picture teaches the word, and her deck spends it on the two safest superlatives in Chinese: 我最爱我的妈妈, 我最爱我的奶奶.

The squeezed heart 忄 stands on the left — the same one you met in 忙, busy — because fear is heart business. 白, white, only lends the sound, bái bent into pà. But keep the coincidence: it is free mnemonics that a frightened face goes white. 害怕 hàipà doubles it with 害, harm — 'harm-fear' — and takes its object straight: 我最害怕老鼠.
